What to expect

Slow roads, early mornings, and food with heat.

Pace

Roads wind and traffic is slow. Short distances can take hours. We plan fewer, longer stops.

What to pack

Light cotton on the coast. A warm layer for the hills and early mornings.

Food

Rice and curry, hoppers at breakfast, fresh seafood on the coast. The spice runs hot. Tell us and we adjust it.

Wildlife

Leopards at Yala, which usually closes for part of September and October. From about June to September, elephants gather in their hundreds at Minneriya.

Before you go

Papers, temples and full moons.

We confirm each of these with you before you travel.

Checked against official sources in October 2026.

Entry

Every visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before arrival. For many nationalities it is free for short stays, and the official site shows the rule for your passport. Your passport should be valid for six months from arrival.

Health

Speak to your doctor about vaccinations. Mosquitoes carry dengue, so bring repellent.

Temples

Cover shoulders and knees. Shoes and hats come off at the door.

Poya days

Each full moon is a public holiday. Alcohol is not sold and some places close. We plan around it.

Money

The Sri Lankan rupee. Cards work in hotels and larger restaurants. Carry cash for villages and tips.

Festivals

The Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid April brings crowds and closures. The Kandy Esala Perahera falls in July or August, set by the moon.

Official advice

Rules can change at short notice. Check your own government’s travel advice when you book, and again before you fly.

Where we stay

Bungalows, lodges and quiet courtyards.

Three examples of the kind we look for: four and five star hotels and boutique stays we would choose ourselves.
