The route

North, into the dark and the quiet.

Each stay takes you a little further from the lights. Fly in to Rovaniemi, home from Ivalo.

01 Rovaniemi · 2 nights

Across the Arctic Circle.

Arrive in the snow. A first walk in the forest on snowshoes, and the Arktikum, to understand where you are.

Your winter clothes are fitted on the first afternoon.

The airport is about fifteen minutes from town.

02 Saariselkä · 3 nights

A glass roof and a long night.

Fells and old forest at the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park. A husky team for a morning, and a cabin with a glass roof.

The roof is glass, and the nights are long.

From Rovaniemi, about three hours by road.

03 Inari · 2 nights

The heart of Sámi country.

Siida, the Sámi museum and nature centre. A morning with a reindeer herding family. Ice fishing on the frozen lake.

Lake Inari is Finland’s third largest lake, frozen for much of the year.

From Saariselkä, about forty minutes.

04 Utsjoki · 2 nights

The top of Finland.

The northernmost village in the country, on the Teno river and the Norwegian border. Few lights, and wide skies.

The darkest skies on the route, and the best place to wait for the lights.

From Inari, about an hour and a half. Ivalo airport is about two hours back.

A day on the route

A day in Saariselkä.

A midwinter day from the middle of the journey, to show its pace.

Illustrative. Your days are designed around you.
  1. 08:30

    A slow breakfast

It is still dark outside. Coffee, porridge, lingonberries.

  2. 10:00

    The husky team

Your own sled behind a team of dogs, through the forest as the light comes up.

  3. 12:30

    Lunch in a kota

A Lappish hut with a fire in the middle, and salmon cooked on a plank beside it.

  4. 14:00

    Blue hour

The sun sets early. The snow turns blue, then violet.

  5. 16:00

    Sauna

Wood-fired, with a roll in the snow after, for those who want one.

  6. 19:00

    Dinner

Reindeer, Arctic char, cloudberries with cream.

  7. 21:00

    Under the sky

Back to the glass roof. If the lights come, someone wakes you.

Who is travelling

The same route, shaped around who is coming.

Here is what usually changes.

As a couple

Slower, quieter, more time alone.

  • A glass-roofed cabin, just for two.
  • A reindeer sleigh ride, with a fire waiting at the end.
  • Dinner in a wilderness hut, then the sky.
  • Late mornings, and the darkest skies saved for you.

With friends

Room to be together, and room to split up.

  • A log house for the group, with its own sauna.
  • A husky safari, with a team each.
  • A night out on snowmobiles to look for the lights.
  • Ice fishing, and the catch cooked over the fire.

With family

Shorter outings, warm breaks, and things children remember.

  • Shorter outings, with warm huts on the way.
  • Reindeer and huskies that children can meet and feed.
  • Sledging, snowshoes and snow castles.
  • Early dinners, and warm layers by the door for the lights.

On your own

Your own pace, and company when you want it.

  • A glass-roofed cabin with an aurora alert, so you never miss the sky.
  • A husky safari with a guide, and your own team if you want to drive.
  • Dinner with a Sámi host in Inari, and stories of the north.
  • A guide on every outing into the wild, so you are never alone out in the cold.
