The route

North to south, the way the country runs.

Vietnam is long and narrow. We fly between regions, so no day is lost to the road.

01 Hanoi · 3 nights

The city before it wakes.

Tai chi by Hoan Kiem Lake at dawn. Bun cha at a low plastic table. The Temple of Literature in its quiet hour.

A guide who grew up in the Old Quarter, and knows which doors to open.

From the airport, about forty-five minutes.

02 Lan Ha Bay · 1 night

Limestone and still water.

A small boat, away from the busiest routes of Ha Long. Kayaks or a rowing boat into quiet coves, and a night at anchor.

We choose the boat for its size and its route, not its brochure.

From Hanoi, about two and a half hours by expressway.

03 Central coast · 4 nights

Lanterns on the river.

Hoi An’s Old Town while it is still quiet. A day north to Hue, over the Hai Van Pass.

Tailors, a cookery morning, bicycles through the rice fields. Or none of it.

Fly from Hanoi to Da Nang, about an hour and a quarter. Hoi An is forty minutes on.

04 Ho Chi Minh City · 2 nights

Fast streets, quiet corners.

Coffee on a balcony above the traffic. A walk through the quieter back streets. The markets, the old post office, a rooftop at dusk.

An evening on the back of a scooter with a local rider, if you would like it.

From Da Nang, about an hour and a half by air.

A motorbike with two riders on a sunlit street of old shophouses, with plants spilling from the balconies

05 Mekong Delta · 2 nights

Life on the water.

A riverside lodge, small boats through the canals, and a floating market soon after sunrise.

The market at Cai Rang, near Can Tho, is at its busiest before seven.

From the city, about three to four hours by road, and back again for your flight home.

A day on the route

A day in Hoi An.

A day from the middle of the journey, to show its pace.

Illustrative. Your days are designed around you.
  1. 06:00

    The Old Town, empty

Yellow walls and lanterns before the shops open. Coffee where the boatmen drink it.

  2. 07:30

    Breakfast by the river

Banh mi, fruit, strong coffee with condensed milk.

  3. 09:00

    Into the countryside

Flat lanes by bicycle, through rice fields to the vegetable village at Tra Que.

  4. 11:00

    A cookery morning

Cooking with a family, then eating what you made.

  5. 13:30

    The heat of the day

Kept for the pool, or for sleep.

  6. 17:00

    A tailor, if you like

    Measured today, fitted tomorrow.

  7. 18:30

    Lanterns on the Thu Bon

A small boat as the lights come on, and a paper lantern set on the water.

  8. 20:00

    Dinner

Cao lau and white rose dumplings, the town’s own dishes.

Who is travelling

The same route, shaped around who is coming.

Here is what usually changes.

As a couple

Slower, quieter, more time alone.

  • A boat on Lan Ha Bay with only a few cabins, or one just for you.
  • Hoi An’s lanes at dawn, then breakfast by the river.
  • Fewer places, and more nights in each.
  • A rooftop in Ho Chi Minh City at dusk, and a table booked for after.

With friends

Room to be together, and room to split up.

  • A boat on the bay taken for the whole group.
  • A street food night in Hanoi, with a guide who knows every stall.
  • Tailors in Hoi An, with fittings planned around the group.
  • A free day in Ho Chi Minh City to split up, and dinner together after.

With family

Shorter legs, longer breaks, and things children remember.

  • Short flights between regions instead of long drives.
  • Bicycles in the rice fields, and lantern making in Hoi An.
  • A Mekong lodge with room to run, and boats to ride.
  • Rooms together, and afternoons kept free for the pool.

On your own

Your own pace, and company when you want it.

  • Hanoi’s Old Quarter early with your guide, then coffee where the locals drink it.
  • A small boat on Lan Ha Bay with only a few cabins, so dinner can be shared or not.
  • A cookery class in Hoi An that starts at the market.
  • Ho Chi Minh City after dark on the back of a Vespa, with a driver who knows the city.
